Ibeju-Lekki

The beach heart of the peninsula — resorts, fishing villages, and long stretches of Atlantic coast where the actual holiday happens. Ibeju-Lekki is where Lagos remembers it has an ocean. Past all the estates and traffic and skyline, the peninsula opens up into wide expressway with Atlantic beach on your right and the Dangote Refinery construction on your left. The beaches here — Eleko, Lekki Free Zone stretches, and further to La Campagne Tropicana — are the real thing, with dune grass and fishing pirogues and locals surfing on Sundays. This suits couples wanting a proper beach break, weekend party groups renting beach houses, and anyone who wants a break from Lagos density. It does not suit anyone with limited time — you’re 90+ minutes from the airport and 45+ minutes from Lekki nightlife. Beach houses run $150-$400 per night; resort rooms $80-$200; simpler guesthouses $50-$90. Book ahead — weekends fill 2-3 weeks in advance from November to March.

Vos questions, nos réponses

Which beach in Ibeju-Lekki is best?

For families and quiet, La Campagne Tropicana. For lively and cheap, Eleko. For the actual most beautiful coast, further east toward Akodo Beach where the fishing villages are — but that's a full-day expedition, not a casual visit.

Can you swim safely at Ibeju-Lekki beaches?

At La Campagne and other private resorts, mostly yes with caution. At public beaches like Eleko, be very careful — the Atlantic undertow off this coast is strong and there are no lifeguards. Stay in waist-deep water at most and never swim alone or after drinking.
