Eleko is the beach most Lagosians think of when they say 'let's go to the beach' east of Lekki. It's a stretch of public beach with rows of private wooden huts you can rent for the day, coconut palms, horse rides, and weekend crowds that turn it into a full-scale party by Sunday afternoon. It's not resort-polished — it's raw, loud, and cheap.This suits budget travellers, weekend groups looking for a full-day beach hangout, and anyone who wants a proper local scene over a manicured resort. It does not suit anyone expecting cleanliness standards of European beaches — there's litter, drink hawkers, and the sea can be rough. Hut rentals run $25-$50 per day; nearby guesthouses $50-$90; beach houses via Airbnb $150-$300. Skip the beach on public holidays unless you actively want crowds of thousands.

Is Eleko Beach free to access?

Public access is free but you’ll pay $2-$5 at the gate for entrance in a car and then $25-$50 for a hut if you want somewhere to sit. Walk-in without a hut, you can sit on the sand but everyone else has a hut with food and drinks, so it's a lonely option.

How rough is the ocean at Eleko?

Rougher than most travellers expect — the Atlantic swell here is real, undertow is strong, and there are no lifeguards. Stay in waist-deep water and never swim after drinking or alone. Every year there are drownings. Take this seriously.
