Day trip to Epe from Lekki

One hour east down the Lekki-Epe Expressway gets you to a working fish market and a lagoon full of stilt villages.

Getting there

Epe is 55km from Lekki Phase 1, straight down the Lekki-Epe Expressway past Ajah and Awoyaya. Hire a car and driver for the day at $60-$80, or Uber one-way for about $25 and grab a Bolt back. Leave Lekki by 7am to beat traffic and catch the fish market at full swing. Expect toll charges of about $2 total on the Lekki-Epe corridor.

What to do

Start at Epe Fish Market on the waterfront: catfish, tilapia and prawns straight off the canoes from 7am, prices in the $2-$5 range per kilo. Negotiate a private boat from the jetty for about $30 an hour to visit Ito Ikin and the stilt villages on the lagoon. Lunch is grilled catfish and pepper soup at a waterfront shack for under $10. Afternoon: Marina Resort for a swim and lagoon-view drinks, then drive back before 6pm to dodge the return traffic.

Good to know

Is Epe safe for tourists?+

Yes. It is a busy market town, not a security concern. Keep phones and cash discreet at the market as you would anywhere.

Can I do Epe as a half day?+

Tight but possible if you skip the boat and just do the market and a lunch. Leave Lekki at 7am and you can be back by 1pm.

Is there anywhere to stay in Epe?+

Marina Resort has clean rooms from $60 a night if you want a slower pace. Most travellers day-trip.

What should I buy at Epe Fish Market?+

Live catfish, smoked prawns and fresh coconuts. Bring an insulated bag if you plan to cook back at a shortlet.
