Who it suits
Ikota sits east of Osapa, just past the VGC junction, and is anchored by the Ikota Shopping Complex — hundreds of stalls selling fabric, ready-made clothing, curtains, imported electronics. It is a major destination in itself for Nigerians visiting Lagos from other states, and the accommodation grew around that trade. Rooms are functional rather than glamorous, and prices sit below Osapa but above Ajah.
It suits shoppers, wholesalers and anyone whose main reason for coming to Lekki is to buy Ankara or aso-oke fabric in bulk. It also suits travellers on longer trips who want a base that is neither the Phase 1 tourist bubble nor the Ajah frontier.
Who it does not suit
Anyone here for the beach — Ikota is on the lagoon side of the expressway and the nearest good beach (Elegushi) is a 20-minute drive back west. Anyone here for restaurants or nightlife — Ikota has very little of either beyond a few chophouses and one or two mid-range lounges.
Business travellers with Island meetings — Ikota to Victoria Island is 45 minutes off-peak and 90+ in traffic, which is enough to make Phase 1 or Chevron worth the extra ₦20,000 a night.
What is within walking distance
The Shopping Complex, first and foremost — you can spend three days walking its aisles without repeating stalls. There is a decent supermarket cluster around the complex, a Ruff n Tumble (Nigerian kids' clothes chain), a Med Plus pharmacy, several bureaux de change and small restaurants doing jollof, egusi and pepper soup for ₦2,000-₦4,000. VGC's commercial cluster is a short drive away with more upmarket options.

Tuesday to Thursday. Mondays are crowded with restocking, Fridays with buyers, weekends chaotic. Arrive by 10am.
Is Ikota safe at night?+
The estate areas are fine. The area immediately around the shopping complex empties by 8pm and gets dark — take a Bolt back rather than walking.
