Where to stay in Epe

The lagoon town at the end of the expressway — ₦20,000-₦40,000 a night, a fish market at dawn, and 90 minutes back to Lagos proper.

Who it suits

Epe is the terminus of the Lekki-Epe Expressway, an old lagoon-side town with a fishing economy that has been swallowed at its edges by new estates and Pan-Atlantic University's Epe campus. Accommodation is small hotels and guesthouses aimed at university visitors and traders, priced well below anywhere on the peninsula proper.

It suits day-trippers who want an overnight rather than a return drive — the Epe Fish Market is best at 6-7am and driving from Lekki that early is grim. It suits students visiting Pan-Atlantic. It suits anyone with a genuine interest in Yoruba fishing communities and lagoon-country cooking (Epe is famous for smoked fish and palm wine).

Who it does not suit

Almost every tourist. Epe is not a tourist town in the resort sense and the accommodation reflects that — clean and functional but no pool, no spa, no english-menu restaurants. If you came to Lagos for Lagos, staying in Epe removes you from what you came for by two hours each way.

Also poor for anyone without a private car. Public transport from Epe to Lekki runs but is slow and infrequent after dark, and Bolt coverage is patchy this far east.

What is within walking distance

Depends where you land. The town centre has the fish market (worth the trip alone — smoked catfish, prawns, tilapia, live crabs from the mangroves), the old palace, a couple of local restaurants doing amala and gbegiri, and small hotels along the main road. Around Pan-Atlantic there is a small commercial strip aimed at students. The lagoon itself is walkable from the town centre and dhows to Ibeju or Ilashe leave from small jetties.

Good to know

Best reason to actually stay in Epe?+

The fish market at dawn, honestly. Everything else is better from Lekki, but the market experience is transformed by being able to walk there at 5:45am instead of driving 90 minutes.

Is Epe safe for foreign travellers?+

Yes, unusually so — small-town rhythms, community accountability, and no history of tourist-targeted incidents. Normal city sense applies.
