Where the risk actually is
Lekki Phase 1, Ikate, Oniru and the gated estates of Chevron and Agungi are heavily patrolled, have private security at estate gates, and see very little violent crime against foreigners. Petty theft — phone snatching from car windows in traffic, bag grabs at ATMs — is the realistic risk. Keep your phone off your lap in Bolts, especially near the Lekki toll gate where the traffic slows and windows tempt opportunists.
The stretch of Lekki-Epe Expressway between Sangotedo and Awoyaya feels quieter and less policed after dark. Ibeju-Lekki toward Eleko is fine by day for beach trips but you don’t want to be broken down there at 11pm. Avoid walking on the expressway itself at any hour; there are no pavements and drivers do not expect pedestrians.
The three caveats
First, protests. The 2020 Lekki toll gate incident is still politically raw, and any planned protest on the expressway can shut everything down — check local news before travel days in October especially. Second, scams: no bank or hotel will ever call you asking for a code or PIN. Third, police checkpoints exist and are usually routine; be polite, keep your passport copy handy, don’t film them, and don’t offer money unless asked directly for a specific fine.
Solo female travellers report Lekki as comfortable during the day and in restaurants and hotel bars at night. Standard nightlife rules apply on Admiralty Way — watch your drink, leave with the people you came with, use Bolt not street cars. The hotels along Freedom Way and Admiralty are generally the safest late-night pickup points.

Do I need a bodyguard or private security?+
No. Regular tourists staying in Lekki Phase 1 or Ikate hotels do not need private security. Executives visiting oil companies sometimes use them but that's a corporate liability decision, not a real safety need.
Is it safe to walk around Lekki Phase 1 at night?+
Short walks between restaurants and hotels on Admiralty Way, Freedom Way and Adebayo Doherty are fine until around 11pm. After that, take a Bolt even for 500 metres.
