This is when Lagos floods
May is the month locals warn you about. Not because it rains all day — most days you get one or two hours of dramatic thunderstorm around 4pm — but because Lagos drainage cannot cope. The Lekki-Epe Expressway around Ajah, Sangotedo and the VGC roundabout floods within 20 minutes of a heavy downpour. A trip from Victoria Island to Ajah that takes 45 minutes in February can take 3.5 hours in May if you time the rain badly. Ride-hail apps surge 2-3x during storms.
Humidity sits at 85%. Mosquitoes come back with real force after the dry months, so pack repellent and check that your room has intact window screens. Temperatures actually drop slightly to 30-31°C during the day, but the wet heat feels worse than dry 34°C in March. Beach days are unreliable — you can get a perfect morning at Eleko and a washout by 3pm.
The lowest rates of the year
The upside is that May is the cheapest month in Lekki. Radisson Blu Anchorage sits at ₦140,000, The George drops to ₦95,000, and serviced apartments in Ikate and Chevron go for ₦65,000-80,000 on Airbnb. Restaurants take walk-ins. Nike Art Gallery tours are private by default. If you’re a business traveller with meetings in Victoria Island and a driver who knows the back routes, May is fine. If you’re on a beach holiday, pick another month.
What's open: everything indoor. What's unreliable: beach clubs (many close weekday operations), boat cruises (cancelled when the lagoon gets choppy), and the Lekki Conservation Centre canopy walk (closed after heavy rain because the boardwalk gets slippery).
