What Detty December actually is
From about December 15 to January 5, Lekki becomes the epicentre of a diaspora homecoming — 100,000-plus visitors from London, New York, Houston and Atlanta return to Lagos for a solid three weeks of concerts, beach parties, weddings, brunches and clubs. Everything doubles in price and difficulty: hotel rooms that were $130 in November go to $260 to $350, table minimums at Quilox jump to $800, boat charters need booking a month ahead, and traffic goes from bad to biblical. It is also the best time to be in Lekki.
What to book and when
Book hotels by September — the Radisson, Landmark, Fraser Suites, Wheatbaker and Lakowe are sold out by November. Book club tables through venue Instagram DMs by November. Book any boat charter by mid-November — Tarzan Marine and Wavez are gone by December 1. Concerts: Wizkid Livespot, Davido O2 series, Rema, and the Detty Rave-style events sell out in October. Hire a car with driver for the two weeks — Bolt surge pricing at 3x makes hires cheaper by the third day.
Is it worth it?
If you love parties, music, dressing up and crowds — this is the best 21 days in African tourism, and Lekki is the centre of it. If you want quiet beaches and cheap dinners, come in February instead. First-time visitors: come for the energy but stay 5 to 7 nights, not 3 weeks. It's exhausting. Locals leave Lagos in early January to recover; you can do the same by driving up to a resort in Ibadan for two nights to catch breath.

How much extra should I budget?+
Roughly 60 to 100% on top of any normal Lagos budget. A comfortable Detty December week runs $2,500 to $5,000 per person including flights, accommodation, three concerts and food. Cheaper is possible if you pre-book everything.
Is safety worse in December?+
Crime opportunities rise with crowd density and cash flow. Standard Lagos precautions apply harder — no phones out in traffic, Bolt door-to-door, no walking home from clubs. Actual violent crime against tourists is not notably higher; petty theft is.
