The August Break in Lekki: Lagos's secret dry spell

A 3-4 week dry pause in mid-rainy-season that most tourists don’t know exists.

What the August Break actually is

The August Break — locals just call it "August Break" — is a meteorological quirk of coastal West Africa. For roughly three to four weeks between mid-July and mid-August, the monsoon rains pause. The exact dates shift year to year, but you can expect a stretch of mostly dry, mostly cloudy days with temperatures around 27-29°C. It's the coolest weather Lagos ever sees. Nights drop to 22°C, mornings feel almost autumnal, and the air is clean because the recent rains have washed the dust away.

This is genuinely one of the best times to visit Lekki, and almost nobody outside Nigeria knows about it. Beach days at Eleko and Ilashe are pleasant rather than punishing. Boat cruises to Tarkwa Bay run reliably. The Lekki Conservation Centre trails are green and lush, and you can actually spot monkeys without wilting.

Prices haven’t caught up

Because it's technically still rainy season on paper, hotel rates stay at rainy-season levels. Radisson Blu Anchorage around ₦150,000, The Wheatbaker around ₦190,000, boutique Ikate hotels at ₦100,000-120,000. Nigerian summer holidays mean domestic families take short breaks — Landmark Beach and La Campagne Tropicana see weekend crowds but weekdays are quiet. Restaurants like Cactus, RSVP and Nok by Alara are easy to book.

The risk: the break can end abruptly. A dry August 10th can be followed by torrential rain on the 12th. Build a flexible day into your plan. If you’re picking one week to visit Lekki that most travellers overlook, pick the first week of August.

Bon à savoir

How reliable are the August Break dates?+

Not fully. Some years it starts July 20th, some years August 5th. Watch Lagos weather forecasts a week ahead.

Is it cold enough for a jacket?+

Mornings and evenings, yes — a light layer. It's the only time of year most Lagosians pull out anything warm.
