Where to stay in Lekki Phase 1

The 20-year-old original Lekki, where a decent 4-star room runs ₦85,000-₦150,000 a night and you can actually walk to dinner.

Who it suits

Phase 1 is the pick if it is your first time in Lekki and you want to leave the hotel on foot. Admiralty Way, Fola Osibo and Bisola Durosinmi Etti pack in the density that the rest of the peninsula lacks — Cafe Neo, Nok by Alara, Ile-Iya, RSVP, Shiro. Business travellers on Ozumba Mbadiwe with meetings on both sides of the bridge stay here because it splits the difference with Victoria Island in about 15 minutes off-peak.

It also suits anyone who wants a serviced apartment rather than a hotel. Whitesands, Bella Vista and the small blocks off Freedom Way rent studios from around ₦70,000 a night for a week-plus stay, which is cheaper than the equivalent hotel category and gives you a kitchen for the school-run mornings.

Who it does not suit

If you are here for the beach resorts and the Lekki Free Zone, Phase 1 is the wrong end of the peninsula — you will spend two hours a day in the car reaching Eleko or La Campagne. It is also loud. Admiralty Way traffic starts honking at 6am and the bars on Fola Osibo run to 4am on Fridays and Saturdays. Light sleepers should ask for a room facing the lagoon side.

Prices sit about 25-40% above equivalents in Ikate or Agungi. You are paying for location, not fresher build.

What is within walking distance

From the Admiralty Way roundabout you can walk to about 40 restaurants, three cinemas (Circle Mall is 10 minutes on foot from the eastern edge), two large supermarkets (Ebeano and Justrite), an ATM cluster and half a dozen cocktail bars. The First Toll Gate is a five-minute drive, useful because most airport pickups meet you there rather than fighting into the estate. The nearest actual beach is Elegushi, 12 minutes down the expressway.

Good to know

Is Phase 1 walkable at night?+

Admiralty Way and Fola Osibo are, up to around midnight, with heavy foot traffic and security outside every bar. Side streets go dark and have no pavements — take a bolt for anything more than 400m off the main strips.

How does Phase 1 compare on price to Victoria Island?+

Broadly similar for 4-star hotels (₦100,000-₦180,000) but 20-30% cheaper for serviced apartments, and considerably cheaper for food and drinks once you are out of the hotel.
