Getting to Tarkwa Bay

From Lekki, cross to Victoria Island and catch a boat from Walter Carrington Crescent jetty or Five Cowries Terminal. Round trip is about $15-$20 per person on a shared boat, or $120 for a private charter. Rides take 20-25 minutes across Lagos Harbour past container ships and Tin Can Island. Boats run 8am to 5pm; do not miss the last return.

On the beach

Tarkwa is sheltered by a breakwater, so swimming is safe and there is a small surf school renting boards for $15 an hour with a 90-minute lesson at $30. The beach has palm shacks selling grilled fish, jollof and cold beers for $5-$10. It is more local and less polished than Ilashe: bring your own towel and cash, and tip the boat captain about $2 on arrival.
