1) Nike Art Gallery in Ikate — five floors, over 8,000 pieces, and the largest gallery of its kind in West Africa. Nike Okundaye herself is often on site giving impromptu tours, and the range spans traditional adire, contemporary painting, sculpture and photography. Free entry. Tip the floor guide ₦2,000. 2) Rele Gallery — the newer Onikan branch is on the Island, but the Lekki-adjacent programme with pop-up shows and their Young Contemporaries prize is worth following. Check the schedule before you go.
Nike Gallery is not just a Lagos landmark — it's genuinely one of the most impressive private galleries in Africa, and yet somehow undervisited by international travellers. Two hours minimum. Buy something small on the ground floor if you can. Rele is the more curated contemporary space; Nike is more encyclopedic. Together they cover both ends of Lagos art in a single day if you plan well.

3) Signature Beyond Art Gallery on Idejo Street — technically VI but 12 minutes from Phase 1, with a strong roster of Nigerian contemporary painters and photographers. 4) Terra Kulture in VI — bookshop, gallery, and Nigerian restaurant in one, with rotating exhibitions and a full theatre programme. The buffet lunch is worth its own visit. Skip any gallery whose main marketing channel is Instagram reels of unnamed paintings — the peninsula has a couple of these and they trade in tourist markup rather than art.
One practical note: openings in Lagos happen on Sunday afternoons and Thursday evenings. If you’re here for one of those, ask your hotel or check Rele's and Signature's schedules — you’ll walk into a real Lagos art crowd, and the wine is free.

Can I buy art and get it home?+
Nike Gallery ships internationally. Smaller unframed pieces roll into a tube and fly as hand luggage. Bronze pieces need declaration at customs.
How much for a good original?+
Nike's ground floor has framed originals from ₦25,000. Serious contemporary work at Rele or Signature runs ₦300,000 to several million.
