When to visit Lekki: month-by-month

The honest Lekki weather calendar — dry, wet, harmattan and Detty December — with prices swinging from $60 to $400 for the same room.

Dry season: November to March

November through mid-March is the best time to visit Lekki. Days are 29 to 33C, humidity manageable, and the harmattan (mid-December to early February) brings a dry haze that softens the sun. December is the peak — the Detty December diaspora tsunami makes hotels 40 to 100% more expensive and clubs impossible without table bookings a month ahead. If you want the party, come in December but book in October. If you want the same weather quieter, come mid-January to early March. Hotel rates $95 to $200 back to normal.

Rainy season: April to October

Real rainy season is May through August with a shorter break in August. Rain is heavy and short — most days have a two-hour downpour and then clear humid heat. Flooding on estate roads is common and traffic doubles. Upside: hotel rates drop 25 to 40%, beaches are less crowded, and boat trips are moody and beautiful in the light. Downside: some boat operators cancel, harmattan is over so the sun bites, and mosquitoes are worst July to September. Bring a proper rain jacket, not an umbrella.

The verdict

Best all-round: February. Warm, dry, quieter than December, cheap-ish. Best for parties: December 20 to January 3 (book July). Best for value: June and July if you can handle rain. Worst month: September — rain still lingers, humidity is brutal, and it's between seasons for pricing. Whatever month, avoid arriving on a Friday afternoon or leaving on a Sunday evening — the traffic will define your trip.

Good to know

Is harmattan a problem for tourists?+

It's a dry, dusty haze that reduces visibility and can irritate the throat. It rarely stops any activity but it does mute sunsets and put a fine dust on everything. Bring lip balm and eye drops. December to early February most years.

Do I need mosquito nets and malaria prophylaxis?+

Yes to malaria prophylaxis for any Lekki visit — speak to a travel clinic. Most hotels have screens and air-con so bed nets aren’t necessary at mid-range and up. Bring DEET repellent for evenings outside.
