September and October in Lekki: the second wet peak

The month locals actually fear for flooding, plus Independence Day and the shift back to dry weather.

September is the flood month

September, not May, is when Lekki floods worst. The August Break ends, the rains return with force, and the ground is already saturated from June and July. Streets in Lekki Phase 2, Ikota and parts of Osapa London can sit under half a metre of water for hours. In 2022 and 2024, sections of the Lekki-Epe Expressway around VGC were closed to sedans entirely. If you’re driving your own hire car in September, book an SUV or plan on Uber Comfort.

The rain patterns are more unpredictable than May. Instead of clean afternoon thunderstorms, September brings long grey days with intermittent showers. Humidity is 85%. Room rates are still low — expect ₦130,000-150,000 at Radisson Blu, ₦85,000-100,000 at boutique places. This is not the month for a beach holiday. It is a reasonable month for a work trip with meetings clustered on Victoria Island.

October turns the corner

October 1st is Nigerian Independence Day, a public holiday. Government offices close, banks close, and there's usually a parade at Eagle Square in Abuja rather than Lagos, but Lekki restaurants run promotions and Landmark Beach hosts family events. By mid-October the rain reduces sharply, and the last week of October is often as dry as February. Humidity drops, blue skies return, and outdoor events restart.

Hotel rates start climbing from around October 20th as international travel picks up. Book by early October for the best rates before December pricing kicks in. Airline fares from London and New York are still moderate — Lagos-London around ₦1.1-1.4m on Virgin or British Airways.

Good to know

Should I insure a September trip?+

Yes. Flight cancellations from Lagos flooding are rare but expressway closures can disrupt airport transfers. Build in buffer time.

When does dry season officially return?+

Late October to early November. By November 5th you can usually count on dry days.
