Who Badagry suits
Badagry sits west of Lagos, about 60km from Victoria Island in the opposite direction from Lekki. Its identity is historical — Slave Route, Point of No Return, Vlekete slave market, Mobee Family Museum, first-storey building in Nigeria. Accommodation is limited: a handful of small hotels (Whispering Palms and its neighbours) at ₦25,000-₦60,000 a night, and modest guesthouses in town.
It suits history-focused trips of two to three nights specifically for Badagry, particularly for African-diaspora travellers on ancestral tourism. It suits weekenders who want a beach that is not Lekki's — Badagry's beaches are quieter and the crossing to the Point of No Return is a highlight.
Who should base Lekki instead
Everyone else. Badagry as a day trip from Lekki works — leave at 7am, back by 8pm, and you cover the essential sites without moving hotels. Trying to do Lagos-city things (Nike Art Gallery, Freedom Park, Lekki nightlife) from Badagry is impractical because you cross Lagos each way in traffic that regularly runs three-plus hours.
The exception is if your entire trip is Badagry — no Lagos beyond the airport transfer. Then base Badagry, and you save yourself the two-hour daily commute.
What you save either way
Badagry accommodation is cheaper (₦25-45,000 typical vs Lekki's ₦55-100,000 mid-tier) but you pay it back in transport if you’re commuting. Lekki-to-Badagry day trip by private car costs ₦40,000-₦60,000 including driver waiting time; Badagry-to-Lekki daily commute adds up to more than the room difference within two nights. Mathematics only favours Badagry if you’re staying put once you’re there.

Is Whispering Palms actually good?+
It is aging but still the most established option and has real beachfront. Rooms need updating; the location is unbeatable for Badagry.
