Lekki in June and July: peak rainy season

The wettest 8 weeks of the year, when hotels average 50% occupancy and locals travel abroad.

Grey skies for weeks

June and July are the heart of the rainy season. Total rainfall hits 350-450mm each month, compared with under 30mm in January. It doesn’t rain constantly, but it rains most days, and the sky is grey more often than blue. Locals with the means travel — this is the classic time for Lagos families to visit London, Dubai or Ghana. Business slows down, meeting cancellations are routine, and Fridays in July feel half-empty on Victoria Island.

The good news for visitors: proper thunderstorms have a rhythm you can plan around. Most rain falls in late afternoon and overnight. Mornings from 7am to noon are usually dry and cooler than any other time of year, hovering at 26-28°C. If you want to walk the Lekki Conservation Centre canopy walk without sweating through your shirt, this is actually the window.

What to book and what to skip

Hotels run genuine promotions. Radisson Blu Anchorage and Eko Hotel offer breakfast-included packages at ₦145,000-160,000. Boutique places like The George and Bespoque Suites in Ikate drop to ₦90,000-110,000. Airbnb is a buyer's market — full apartments in Chevron for ₦55,000 a night. Skip beach hotels in Ibeju-Lekki. The waves get rough, red flags fly at La Campagne Tropicana, and you’ll spend the trip staring at a covered pool.

What stays open: restaurants, malls (Ikota Shopping Complex, Circle Mall Jakande), Nike Art Gallery, museums, art openings at Rele Gallery. What suffers: outdoor events, boat trips, beach parties. If a promoter is running an outdoor concert in June or July, they’ve got a plan B venue.

Good to know

Is Lagos really empty in July?+

Not empty, but noticeably calmer. Traffic on Fridays is manageable and restaurants take same-day reservations.

Which is worse, June or July?+

July is slightly drier than June on average but both are wet. Late July sometimes sees a short dry break called the August Break preview.
