The post-December crash
The first week of January in Lekki is the strangest week of the year. Everyone who flew in for Detty December is either still recovering or has just flown back out to London and Houston. Traffic on Admiralty Way is genuinely light for the first time since November. Hotels that were charging ₦280,000 a night at Radisson Blu Anchorage on December 30th drop to ₦150,000 by January 8th. Landmark Beach is quiet, the Hard Rock Cafe crowd is thin, and the club promoters have all gone silent on Instagram.
The catch is that January is harmattan month. Dust from the Sahara sits over the peninsula, skies are white rather than blue, and if you have asthma you will feel it within a day. Temperatures drop to around 22°C at night, which is cold by Lagos standards. Locals wear jackets. The upside: no rain, no mosquitoes worth mentioning, and beach days at Elegushi are properly comfortable rather than sweltering.
What's open, what's shut
Everything reopens by January 6th or so. Restaurants like Cactus, RSVP and Talindo are fully operational. Nike Art Gallery on Elegushi Beach Road runs normal hours. The Lekki Conservation Centre canopy walk is open daily. What's closed or reduced: some of the pop-up beach clubs from December have shut down until Easter, and boat cruise operators run fewer trips midweek. If you wanted Cubana Lagos energy, you missed it by two weeks.
Room rates in mid-January are the best of the whole first quarter. Eko Hotel Victoria Island lists rooms around ₦180,000, boutique places in Ikate like The George drop to ₦120,000, and serviced apartments in Chevron go for ₦90,000 a night on Airbnb. If you want Lagos without the crush, this is the window.

Is harmattan bad in Lekki?+
Milder than up-country cities like Abuja or Kano because the ocean moderates it, but you’ll still see dust haze and dry skin. Bring lip balm and eye drops.
Are flights cheap in January?+
Yes. Lagos-London on British Airways drops from ₦2.5m in December to around ₦900,000-1.2m by mid-January. The second week is the sweet spot.
