Who Ikoyi suits
Ikoyi is the old colonial-then-military-then-elite residential district on the Island, and it has retained a leafy, low-density character that no part of Lekki has. Accommodation is a mix of grand hotels (Wheatbaker, Radisson Blu Ikoyi, Lagos Continental), boutique places (Bogobiri, Villa Barone) and serviced apartments. Rooms sit ₦150,000-₦400,000 at the hotel end.
It suits travellers who want quiet — Ikoyi's streets have almost no through-traffic and mature trees, both rare in Lagos. It suits gallery visitors (Nike Art, Rele, Kó are all Ikoyi or Ikoyi-adjacent). It suits diplomats and their guests — most embassies are here or in VI.
Who should book Lekki instead
Longer-stay travellers, families, budget-conscious business visitors, and anyone whose activities are Lekki-centred (beaches, resorts, Lekki markets). The Link Bridge means Ikoyi is 15 minutes from Phase 1 off-peak, but that is still 30 minutes round trip added to every day.
It also does not suit anyone who wants restaurant density on foot. Ikoyi has excellent individual restaurants (Terra Kulture, Craft Gourmet, Sky Restaurant) but they are spread across a large area, not clustered like Admiralty Way.
The Link Bridge
The Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge (₦300 toll each way) makes the two functionally close — 10 minutes at midday, 20-30 at rush hour. It closes to pedestrians and okada, and cars queue at the toll booth in evening peaks. Anyone shuttling daily between the two should budget the ₦600 daily plus about 45 minutes of driving. If your itinerary really is 50-50 Ikoyi and Lekki, Phase 1 is the smarter base of the two.

More than Lekki, less than VI. Streets have pavements and are shaded; distances are large so most locals still drive or Bolt short trips.
Where do the best galleries sit?+
Nike Art Gallery is in Lekki Phase 1 despite the Ikoyi association many make. Rele Gallery, Kó and Bogobiri's art programme are all in Ikoyi.
