Who Ikeja suits
Ikeja is the Lagos State capital and the mainland's business centre, wrapped around Murtala Muhammed Airport. Accommodation runs from budget guesthouses at ₦20,000 up to Sheraton Lagos, Radisson Ikeja and Ibis Lagos Ikeja at ₦80,000-₦180,000. Ikeja GRA is the leafy residential enclave where the better boutique properties sit.
It suits transit travellers with tight airport connections — being 15-25 minutes from the airport rather than 60-90 changes the math on a red-eye. It suits business travellers with meetings on the mainland (banks operations, telcos, Ikeja Computer Village). It suits anyone with events at MUSON, Balmoral or the airport hotels themselves.
Who should book Lekki instead
Almost everyone else visiting Lagos for leisure. Ikeja to Lekki is 90 minutes off-peak and 2.5-3.5 hours in traffic — a fatal commute if the beaches, resorts and Lekki restaurants are your reason for coming. Even one such trip a day burns half your holiday.
It also does not suit anyone who wants Lagos nightlife. Ikeja has clubs (Klass, Escape when open) but the density and the international-visitor vibe is on the Island. Ikeja's scene is more mainland-local, which is fine if that is what you want but is not what most visitors book Lagos for.
Airport math
If your flight is before 10am or after 10pm, Ikeja saves you real time and stress — a 30-minute transfer versus 90+. If it is a normal daytime flight, the Lekki-to-airport drive is 60-75 minutes off-peak and manageable. The break-even is roughly: if you have three or fewer nights and one of your two airport transfers is red-eye, consider a night on each side (Ikeja on arrival/departure, Lekki in the middle).
Good to know
Is Ikeja GRA quiet like Ikoyi?+
Similar residential character but denser. GRA has more tree cover than most of Ikeja but hears the airport clearly during the day.
Can I visit Lekki as a day trip from Ikeja?+
Practically no. The traffic makes it a full-day commitment either way, and by the time you arrive you have used half the day. Better to relocate for two nights.
